Lang Switcher vs Caramba Switcher vs Boomkey: Which to Pick on a Mac (2026)
August 17, 2026
If you're looking for a cure for typing «руддщ» when you meant «hello» on a Mac, you've almost certainly run into Lang Switcher and Caramba Switcher. Full disclosure up front: Boomkey is our app, so this comparison is written by an interested party. That's why everything below sticks to verifiable facts and a clear map of who each tool is for.
The key thing to understand: these apps solve the same problem in two different ways.
- Auto-switching the layout. The app watches what you type, guesses the language, and switches the keyboard layout for you. That's how Lang Switcher and Caramba Switcher work.
- Fixing what you already typed. You type the way you're used to, and when a word comes out in the wrong layout, it gets corrected - automatically after a space, or with a hotkey. That's how Boomkey works.
The first approach tries to prevent the mistake; the second removes it once it happens. Which feels better is a matter of habit, so here's each app on its own terms.
Lang Switcher
Lang Switcher is a Mac App Store app, listed as Smart Language Switcher and published by Ihor Prodan. It detects which language you started typing in and switches the keyboard layout to the right one automatically.
The facts as of August 2026:
- The developer does not publish a list of supported keyboard layouts, so we can't tell you whether a specific pair is covered. A review thread on the listing indicates Japanese and Korean input methods are not supported.
- Works as an auto-switcher: it watches your typing and changes the layout for you.
- Free download with an annual plan ($7.99-$11.99) or a lifetime unlock ($23.99-$29.99).
- Installs from the Mac App Store, macOS 10.15+. Last updated February 2025.
If auto-switching is what you want and a subscription or a one-time lifetime unlock works for you, it's worth a look - just check that your layout pair actually works during the trial.
Caramba Switcher
Caramba Switcher is an auto-switcher from the creator of Punto Switcher. The practical catch:
- Caramba's App Store listing names only Russian and English layouts. Ukrainian is not mentioned.
- Pricing is a free download plus an auto-renewing annual subscription at $6.99 per year.
- Requires macOS 12 or later, and it is actively maintained.
- It is not purely an auto-switcher: it also converts the last word with a double-Shift, much like Boomkey.
So if you type in Ukrainian - or any language pair beyond Russian ↔ English - Caramba doesn't cover your case. For a fuller side-by-side, see the comparison page.
Boomkey
Boomkey is our native macOS app, and it takes the other route: instead of guessing the layout up front, it fixes text that was already typed in the wrong one.
- Auto-fix on space - type a word, hit space, and if it came out in the wrong layout it's rewritten in place. Currently in beta for English ↔ Ukrainian, Belarusian, Hebrew, Russian.
- Hotkey conversion - double Shift (or any combo you set) converts selected text between any two installed layouts - not a fixed language list. Nothing selected? The last word you typed gets fixed.
- Per-app rules and an exceptions dictionary - terminals and code editors are off by default, and names or logins never get "corrected".
- Everything is processed locally on your Mac; it's a native Swift app, no Electron.
- Pricing: one-time purchase, no subscription, free lifetime updates. 7-day trial with no card and no account. Current price in your currency is on the pricing page.

Which one to pick
- You want the layout switched for you and you're on an older macOS: Lang Switcher is a reasonable choice, though you'll need to confirm your layout pair works.
- You want proactive switching in English and Russian on a current macOS: Caramba Switcher is the closest match to what Punto Switcher did.
- You type in Ukrainian or need any pair beyond Russian ↔ English: Caramba doesn't list support for those.
- You'd rather type the way you're used to and have mistakes disappear - after a space or with a double Shift - or you need other layout pairs: try Boomkey free for 7 days. See also the full comparison and the Ukrainian layout guide. No card, no account; if it doesn't stick, you've lost nothing.
Type freely. Boomkey fixes it.
