What Boomkey does, where it works, and where it doesn't. If your question isn't here, ping us via the support page.
Getting started
How do I set Boomkey up?#
Install the app, then grant it Accessibility permission when prompted (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility). Boomkey lives in the menu bar and starts working right away. No account or login needed.
How does the auto-fix on space work?#
Just type normally. The moment you hit space after a word typed in the wrong layout, Boomkey rewrites it in the correct one. Auto-fix is in beta and works for English ↔ Ukrainian, Belarusian, Hebrew, and Russian.
How does the Shift+Shift hotkey work?#
Select any text and double-tap the Shift key, and the selection gets converted into the right layout. Works with any amount of text and any pair of installed keyboard layouts.
There's also an optional Correct last word mode (off by default): with nothing selected, the hotkey fixes the word right before the cursor.
Purchase & Activation
Direct download vs the App Store version — what's the difference?#
Both fix text typed in the wrong layout, but they are different apps. The version downloaded from this site is the full one: it fixes words automatically as you type. The Mac App Store version is lighter: it fixes selected text on demand, with zero setup and no system permissions.
| Direct download | App Store | |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-fix as you type (on space) | ✓ beta, English ↔ Ukrainian, Belarusian, Hebrew, Russian | — |
| Fix selected text with a hotkey | ✓ double-tap Shift, any layout pair | ✓ ⌘⇧7 or right-click → Services |
| Fix the last word before the cursor | ✓ | — |
| Convert clipboard text with a hotkey | — | ✓ |
| Turn off in specific apps | ✓ | — |
| Works without system permissions | needs Accessibility | ✓ |
| Free to try | ✓ 7-day trial | ✓ 20 fixes per day |
| One-time purchase | ✓ license for 2 Macs | ✓ Pro unlock via Apple |
In short: if you want typos fixed for you as you type, get the direct version. The App Store version is for fixing selected text on demand.
How do I activate Boomkey?#

Not supported: Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Nepali, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Khmer, Lao, Burmese, Tibetan, Sinhala, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Odia, Amharic, and other languages where each character is composed from several keys.
Does it work with Chinese / Japanese?#
No, Chinese and Japanese aren't supported. Korean (2-set / 두벌식) is the exception and works with the double-Shift hotkey.
What about Hindi, Thai, Bengali, Tamil, etc.?#
Not yet. In these languages one letter is often made from several keystrokes, and we haven't tested them properly, so they're off for now. Use one of them? Write to us and we'll look into adding it.
Why isn't my layout in the settings list?#
Layouts for Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and similar languages aren't supported, so they're hidden from the list. Korean (2-set) is supported and should appear in the list. If something else is missing, write to us.
Apps
Which apps does Boomkey work in?#
In most cases, if an app has a normal text field, Boomkey will work there. If you're unsure about a specific app, the fastest check is to try it.
Confirmed to work in:
- Slack, Telegram, Signal, WhatsApp, Messenger, Viber
- Mail, Outlook, Spark
- Notes, Bear, Obsidian, Notion
- Google Docs, Google Sheets, Figma (text layers)
- Pages, Numbers, Keynote
- Safari, Chrome, Arc, Firefox (in input fields)
- Discord, Zoom chat, Teams
Where doesn't it work by default?#
Boomkey is off out of the box in these apps. Both auto-fix and the Shift+Shift hotkey are disabled there by default, and you can turn either back on per app in settings:
Code editors: VS Code, Xcode, Sublime Text, Nova, Atom, Zed, and all JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, etc.)
Terminals: Terminal.app, iTerm2, Ghostty, Kitty, Hyper, Warp, WezTerm, Alacritty
Reason: code and shell commands often contain “words” that look like typos but are actually correct (variable names, flags, paths), so correcting them creates more problems than it solves.
What about passwords?#
Boomkey leaves password fields alone. It never reads or changes what you type in them.
Other limits
Will it ever "correct" a word I typed correctly?#
A few things keep that from happening:
- One-letter words are left alone.
- Once it fixes a word, it won't undo that for a couple of seconds, so nothing flips back and forth.
- You can keep your own list of words it should never touch.
- You can turn it off for any specific app.
What permissions does it need?#
Just one: Accessibility permission. macOS requires it for any app that types or replaces text for you. Boomkey asks for nothing else.
It works on the word you just typed, right on your Mac. Password fields and browser address bars are left alone, and code editors and terminals are off by default. The only time it goes online is to check your license and look for updates, and every release is checked by Apple.
What do I need to run Boomkey?#
- macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs
- Accessibility permission
- At least two keyboard layouts installed in macOS
